Description:
Book of Hours (Use of Rome) made in the workshop of the famous illuminator Jean Colombe c 1480 for a widow in the region of Tours. At the opening of the Seven Verses of Bernard followed by prayers (f 162-8) is a miniature of a nimbed standing Bernard in a white tunic and black scapular. Bernard has caught a large brown and grey demon and is holding him with a red and yellow stole or scarf round the demon's neck. The scene is a landscape with mountains in the background and a large rock immediately behind Bernard.
