An early 16th century Latin Book of Hours (Use of Rome) typical of the Ghent or Bruges school of illumination which flourished 1475 to 1540 has a miniature of Bernard introducing the text of the Verses of Bernard interspersed by the O Antiphons. Bernard in a white cowl stands in a landscape in front of a rosa hanging. He has a crozier in his right hand and a chain in his left at the end of which a brown demon lies at his feet. The border on three sides has flowers, strawberries, a caterpillar, and a butterfly against a gold background.
