Description:
Thirteenth-century composite manuscript containing super 'Missus est' (f3-13v), 'Lamentatio St B super passione Xi (f16v-18), and 'Tractatus de revelatione facta Beato Bernardo a Beata Virgine super dolore quem sensit in passione filii sui' (Treatise on the holy revelation to the Blessed Bernard from the Blessed Virgin on the pain which she feels in the Passion of her Son) (f18-20).This tiny miniature is at the Preface which precedes the larger Annunciation miniature at the opening of the 'Missus est' on the same folio. A nimbed and bearded Bernard is sitting with a book in his left hand and a crozier leaning on his left shoulder while his right hand is pointing at a nimbed figure before him, the Virgin, to whom he is presenting his homily. He is accompanied by one of his monks behind him. Bernard is within the initial S(cribere me aliquid et devotio iubet, et prohibet occupatio), the opening words of the Preface: 'My devotion demands me to write something but I am too busy to do so'.
