Description:
Miniature in a Flemish manuscript of the Golden Legend in French from the second quarter of the fifteenth century. A nimbed standing Bernard with a crozier in his left hand and a closed book with clasp and a chain in his right hand at the end of which is the devil on whom he tramples. He wears a black cowl over a white tunic. He stands on grass with a decorated chequered background. The initial B(ernars) below introduces the etymology which comes before the biographical text proper.
