Description:
One of five images of Bernard in a French version of the Golden Legend from c 1500 made for Jane of Burgundy, daughter of Robert, 2nd duke of Burgundy. Two of them are on this folio (see also MA338), on the left Bernard pointing to Christ on the Cross to a group of kneeling men, while here on the right he stands next to the same group looking at Christ on the Cross from whose side blood is running. A serpent with the body of a woman curls up the Cross while the naked figures of Adam and Eve each holding an apple stand on either side of the Cross. The scene is set in a green landscape with two castles in the background. See also MA336-7 & 340.
