Description:
One of four images of Bernard on three folios in the Hours of Charles V in Latin and French made in Paris 1510-20 (see also MA321 & MA323). The lower part of the folio has an initial I(llumina oculos meos) with Bernard kneeling, his hands clasped in prayer. Creeping up behind him is a brown standing devil at the beginning of the Seven Verses, headed in red ink 'Septem Versus bti bernardi ad diabol'. Set in a landscape with trees and a hill with a tower on top in the background. The rest of the Verses are on the following folio (f 326) with two more miniatures featuring Bernard (MA323). The border is decorated with leaves, flowers, fleurs de lys, and birds.
