Description:
One of eleven full-page miniatures in a small Prayer Book written in 1513 in Latin and German, probably by a Cistercian nun in the region of Cologne. A nimbed Bernard in a dark brown cowl embraces the lifeless-looking and blood-stained body of Christ with his arms detached from the cross in which the two large nails for the hands are still in place. The cross is surmounted by INRI. The cross is on the ground on which are white and red flowers and a snail. Next to Bernard is the inscription in red 'S bernard'. Framed by red white and blue bands and a border of red and green stylized flowers and leaves. Prayers to Bernard occur on f 127v, f 228v, and f 251v, and the 8 Verses of Bernard are found on f 54r. One of the full-page miniatures is of a Cistercian nun kneeling before Mary.
