Description:
The so-called 'Misal Rico de Cisneros' in seven volumes (MSS 1540-6) belonged to Cardinal Cisneros and was made in 1503-18 in Toledo, inspired by the Flemish School and the Italian Renaissance. Volume 6 has a miniature of Bernard at the beginning of the Proper of the Mass of Bernard on f 235r. He is nimbed, wears a white cowl, and has an open book in his left hand and a gold crozier and a chain in his right hand. At the end of the chain is a half-figure of a devil at Bernard's feet. Trees and the roof of a house are in the background. Next to the miniature with Bernard is the gold initial i(n medio ecclesie) on a blue ground. The theme of Bernard and the devil is rare in Spain. Bernard has a 'tuft'.
