Description:
Exquisite tiny Prayer Book with 128 miniatures made between 1511 and 1514 for Claude de France (1499-1524), daughter of Anne of Brittany and Louis XII, betrothed by treaty of Blois 1501 to Charles of Austria, future Emperor Charles V, but in 1505 her father prescribed in his will that she should marry Francois which she did in 1514. In the following year Francois became king. The Seven Verses of Bernard are found on folios 49v & 50r with the Virgin with Child sitting under a baldachin on the far left. The Virgin bares her breast. On the far right of the opposite folio Bernard kneels before a draped stool or prie-dieu on which an open book is placed. Bernard's crozier lies on the ground.
