Description:
Large miniature in a manuscript from Bruges dated between 1445 and 1460 of the Golden Legend in a French translation by Jean de Vignay, at the opening of the section on Bernard. A nimbed youthful-looking Bernard stands in a doorway. He is wearing a black cowl over white tunic and black scapular showing. In his right hand he holds an open red book from which he is reading. In his left hand he has a black crozier with sudarium attached and a gold volute. He tramples on a large devil under foot.
