Description:
Large initial in a Book of Hours perhaps from the Loire Region dated c 1475 at the opening of the Seven Verses of Bernard (f 291r-293v). A standing Bernard, nimbed and in a black cowl with white tunic and black scapular showing underneath and wearing a black cap, holds his right hand up towards a slightly smaller standing devil with a tail whom he is chasing away. Behind is a formal garden with a square pond and in the background a rocky landscape with a castle on the top of a hill. The border is decorated with flowers and leaves.
