Description:
One of 31 miniatures in a Book of Hours (Rome Use) dated c 1485-90 which may have come from Langres. Illustrating the Seven Verses of Bernard (f 24r-25v) is a large miniature with columns supporting a semi-circular top within which is a standing figure of a nimbed Bernard. His black cowl has the hood over his head and the white tunic and black scapular is showing underneath. He has an open book in his left hand and a gold crozier in his right hand as well as a chain at the end of which is a large blueish devil attached by a collar around its neck. The devil has a hairy human face and another human face at the lower part of its body. A church building is behind Bernard and two hills with castles on top in the background. The border is decorated with flowers, leaves, and animals.
