Description:
Early sixteenth-century large historiated initial S cut out from manuscript. Bernard in richly brocaded cope over a black cowl, his hands clasped in prayer with his black crozier with gold crook leaning on his right shoulder, kneels before the seated Virgin with long hair in a blue mantle. She bares her right breast with her right hand. An open book is on her lap. The Child kneels at her feet looking at the book. The background is a rocky landscape with a tree. The initial is decorated with grey fish-scales and gold chiaroscuro acanthus, ending top right in a bearded mask in grisaille, set on a blue-green ground like a picture-frame.
