In an English manuscript dated the third quarter of the thirteenth century of Pope Gregory the Great, Peter of Blois, and Bernard's 'De consideratione' whose origin is not known but which was given to the Franciscans in York, perhaps by Simon Newton. Bernard's work is illustrated with five miniatures of Bernard and Eugenius III and one of Bernard writing. Red letters announce the opening of Book 5 with the initial L(ibri superioris, etsi De consideratione inscribantur) - 'The former books, although they are entitled On Consideration' - within which Bernard on the right has both hands raised in homage to Eugenius on the left who holds Bernard's work in his left hand and has his right hand raised to acknowledge Bernard. Eugenius is wearing the conical papal hat. See also MA283-6 and MA288.
