Description:
One of 12 small miniatures in a Book of Hours, Use of Rome, dated c. 1480 and perhaps from Hainault has a nimbed Bernard in a white tunic and black scapular with an open book in his right hand and a standing devil on a chain in his left as the last of 17 memoria of saints in the form of the Eight Verses introduced above the miniature by 'octo versus sci bernardi' in red ink. Within a gold border and in a landscape with a church on the left.
