Description:
The last of eight images of Bernard from a Legendary illustrated by Nicolas of Bologna dated 1330-40 and featuring the lives of 51 saints. Four are on this folio and four on the preceding facing folio, each image surrounded by foliate decoration. The bottom right features the burial of Bernard. He is placed on a bier in his cowl with the hood over the head. Behind him are four monks, and in the centre a cleric presiding, perhaps a bishop, with a long beard in a blue chasuble or cope. There are three vaulted doors behind and a cross on the wall. The inscription reads: 'Ultima: Quomodo fuit sepultus' (The last one - how he was buried). See also MA246-52.
