Description:
One of eight images of Bernard from a Legendary illustrated by Nicolas of Bologna dated 1330-40 and featuring the lives of 51 saints. Four are on this folio and four on the preceding facing folio, each image surrounded by foliate decoration. The top right image portrays Bernard coming out of church carrying the Host on a paten which he gives to the penitent William of Aquitaine who lies prostrate at Bernard's feet his hands clasped begging for pardon. The door with the roof above symbolizes the church, and the tree behind indicates that it is outside. The inscription reads: 'VI Quomodo portaverat uno comitu corpus Christi sive unam patenam et hoc viso cecidit ad pedes eius' (How he carried the Body of Christ on a paten to the count who, having seen this, fell at his [Bernard's] feet).
