Description:
Magnificently illustrated manuscript of the Sermons on the Song of Songs by Bernard and Gilbert of Hoyland with elegant decoration. Facing a folio with a full-page miniature of the Doctrina (see MA243) is a folio with an equally fine decorated border and a half-figure of a bearded and nimbed Bernard, considerably older than on the facing folio, with a red book in his left hand and his right hand raised in blessing within the opening initial of Sermon One V(obis, fratres, alia quam aliis saeculo, aut certe aliter dicenda sunt) - 'The instructions that I address to you my brothers...'. Bernard has 'tuft'.
