Description:
One of seven historiated initials featuring Bernard in this composite manuscript the principal part of which contains 'De consideratione' which was commissioned by Pope Nicolas V in 1452 (see also MA234-9). The large blue and gold initial V(enerabili patri) opens Bernard's treatise 'dictus Apologeticus', the most frequently used title of his famous 'Apologia'. The three-quarter figure of Bernard with the white hood of his cowl over his head holds a red open book in his left hand - his work - to which he points with the index finger of his right hand. Very similar to MA239.
