Description:
One of seven historiated initials featuring Bernard in this manuscript of 'De consideratione' commissioned by Pope Nicolas V in 1452 (see also MA234 & MA236-40). The large blue initial M(emor promissi mei) - 'I remember the promise I made to you such a long time ago' - announces the beginning of Book Two. On the right Eugenius III stands wearing a rosa cope with gold edging and a gold clasp, tiara, and white gloves with a red spot on each. He holds the red book which Bernard has handed to him. On the left a nimbed Bernard is reading from an open book - his work - which he holds with both hands.
