Description:
One of 42 leaves from an Antiphonary from Mainz dated the last decade of the fifteenth century has a large green historiated initial with acanthus decoration P(rimi virtus viri sancti), the first Responsary of the first Nocturn from Vigils on the feast of Bernard. A nimbed standing Bernard in a rosa cowl is shown holding a red crozier with gold volute in his left hand and a grey book with clasp in his right. Bernard stands on a grey tiled floor against a gold background. At his feet is a dog painted exactly as described both in the 'Vita Prima' and the Golden Legend - white with a reddish back. A similar dog is depicted at the top of the border on the right hand side.
