Description:
Bernard? Miniature in a richly-decorated French Book of Hours, Use of Paris, from the beginning of the fifteenth century with three saints illustrating the Commemoration of the Saints. In the centre St Fiacre with mitre, crozier in left hand and right hand raised in blessing; on left Bernard in white tunic and black scapular and, unusually holding a spade; and on the right St Benedict in black cowl and holding a red book with both hands. All three have halos consisting of gold dots. As St Fiacre is usually shown carrying a spade, and Bernard not, could the figure on the left be Fiacre and the central figure a different saint?
