Description:
One of 8 folios from a Gradual dated c 1524 from St Bernard-op-t'Scheldt produced on behalf of Marcus Cruyt, 29th abbot (1518-36) who ordered it from the Leuven copyist Franciscus van Weert who also copied the 'Manuale Pietatis' (see MA115 & 116). At the beginning of the Mass for the feast of Bernard (In medio ecclesie) there is a Lactation scene set in a church with grey stone walls and wooden stalls. The Virgin sits on a throne with canopy over. She bares her breast which she squeezes with her right hand. Bernard, with his crozier leaning against his left shoulder, kneels before her with hands clasped in prayer. See also MA140.
