Description:
One of a large number of miniatures and historiated initials from a manuscript of the Golden Legend translated to French by Jean de Vignay. Above in red ink it says 'here begins the life of St Bernard'. Within a gold and blue decorated border and against a checkered red background Bernard sits with hands outstretched in a teaching mode in front of two monks, the front one of whom also has his hands outstretched. Bernard has an orange halo, and all three figures are in black cowls with their hoods over their heads.
