Description:
Amplexus image in a South German manuscript (Augsburg?) from 1471 containing the Missal in German together with devotional prayers. Christ's arms are detached from the Cross and clasped round Bernard who reciprocates. The scene is witnessed by a kneeling monk on the left, perhaps the donor or abbot of a Cistercian abbey whose arms are in the bottom left corner, while those of Clairvaux are on the right. A closed book with a mitre on it lies in the middle between the monk and the figures of Christ and Bernard. Above the mitre there seems to be a crozier. Both Bernard and the monk are dressed in black cowls. The figures stand on grass against a decorated background.
