Description:
Historiated initial I(nter ecclesias) at the beginning of Bernard's letter (No 174) to the Canons of Lyon regarding their decision to celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception which he opposed. The subject of the letter is given in red ink: 'Ad canonicos Lugdunenses de conceptione sancte Marie'. Bernard is depicted in a white cowl under a trilobe arch with his right hand raised and index finger pointing in admonishing two tonsured figures representing the canons.
