Description:
A crudely painted miniature in a late fifteenth-century Book of Hours, Use of Rome, Bernard is featured standing in a rural landscape with mountains in the background. He holds an open book in his left hand and looks down on the half-figure of a devil which he holds on a leash in his right hand. Alongside the Seven Verses are introduced in red letters: 'Les sept vers saint b'nard'. The text begins with the blue decorated initial I(llumina oculos meos) on a red ground.
