Description:
Fourteenth-century manuscript of Vincent de Beauvais' 'Le Miroir historial', books 25-32, translated into French by Jean de Vignay. A standing Bernard, in a grey cowl, nimbed and lightly bearded, has his right hand raised with the index finger in a teaching mode in front of a group of five sitting figures: a king with a golden crown, a young man, a queen with a golden crown, and two bearded monks or lay brothers at the back with their hoods over their heads - all dressed in grey. They are on a green ground above which are three kneeling bearded monks (or lay brothers) with their hands clasped in prayer and each holding a rosary. The two at the back have their hoods over their heads. Below the miniature is the text in red ink 'De la commendacion du benoit Bernart abbe de clervaux' and below this the decorated initial L(e premier an de...) - from Book 28, Chapter 1 of the 'Speculum Historiale'.
