Description:
A full-page miniature with four lines of text in a Book of Hours in Latin, probably French, from the beginning of the sixteenth century, introduces the Verses of Bernard which follow (f 144-5): 'Sequuntur versiculi sancti bernardi'. Bernard, in a white cowl and holding a crozier under his left arm while both hands hold an open red book from which he is reading. Stands in a room with a grey tiled floor. At his feet behind him is a devil with red eyes and mouth, a grey body and with points on his head. He is held by Bernard on a chain. Behind Bernard is a blue and green hanging with gold decoration. The image is in a narrow frame with a rounded top and around this is a border decorated with naturalistic flowers, berries, a moth, butterfly and snail.
