In a French manuscript from c 1340 of the Golden Legend translated by John de Vignay, at the beginning of the section on Bernard beginning 'Bernart fu ne en bourgogne...', Bernard is depicted nimbed and mitred, wearing a grey cowl and standing raised in a brown wooden pulpit looking down and pointing to a group of at least a dozen monks, all in grey habits with their hoods over their heads, to whom he is preaching. The background consists of gold, blue, and red checks all within a narrow gold frame.
