Description:
A full-page miniature in a Book of Hours from c 1480, the only one although a number of pages have been left blank for others. A primitively painted conventional Lactation scene with half-figures of Bernard and the Virgin and naked Child behind a sill within a room with pillars on each side and a low red brick wall behind with two windows on either side. A corpulent Bernard in a grey cowl has a crozier in his left hand while his right hand is extended to the Child who stretches both arms out to Bernard. The Virgin bares her breast which she sqeezes with her right hand.
