In a manuscript from 1470-7 of the French version of the Golden Legend translated by Jean de Vignay which belonged to Philippe de Cleves et de la Marck (1469-1527), lord of Ravestein. At the opening of the section on Bernard, the saint is depicted standing on a tiled floor in a vaulted chamber bordered by gold and black columns and against a red and gold brocade hanging. He is nimbed, wearing a white cowl and carrying a gold crozier in his right hand and a black book in his left hand. He stands on a dark grey horned devil with claws on hands and feet whom he is crushing. Bernard has a 'tuft'.
