At the beginning of the section on Bernard in a French manuscript from c 1405 of the Golden Legend translated into French by Jean de Vignay which in 1467 belonged to Philip the Good. A nimbed Bernard is depicted standing on grass and wearing a black cowl with the hood over his head and carrying a red book in his right hand but no crozier. The background is decorated with blue, red, and gold squares and the miniature is contained within a narrow gold frame. The text in the left column following the initial B(ernart) is the etymology with which many of the Lives begin, while the text under the miniature introduces the main biographical information.
