Description:
Miniature in a late thirteenth-century manuscript of Jacobus de Voragine, Legenda Aurea, in Latin written in France, perhaps Paris, at the opening of the chapter on Bernard and above the decorated initial B(ernardus). Bernard in a dark grey cowl and his friend St Malachy in a chasuble and wearing a mitre, both bearded and both carrying croziers, are shown kneeling with their hands clasped in prayer against a blue chequered background within a rosa and gold frame and, above, nine stars in the sky.
