Description:
One of 38 full-page miniatures in a small pocket size (11.5x8.5) richly decorated Book of Hours of the Virgin (Use of Como) from the last quarter of the fifteenth century has a standing Bernard, nimbed, bearded, and in a white cowl, with his left hand holding a chain at one end of which is a small horned demon and the other end is wound round a red column. With his right hand he is pointing at the demon. Bernard stands on a green ground and behind him is a blue background with white dots and decorated border. Like all the other images of saints the border consists of a narrow gold frame. Bernard has 'tuft'.
