Description:
From a fragment of 21 leaves with eight miniatures of a Flemish Book of Hours in Latin from c 1510. Miniature alongside the text 'de sancto bernardo' in gold and continuing in white ink on black background all within a brown border with letters in gold, consisting of the traditional Lactation text from verse 4 of the Marian hymn 'Ave maris stella' but slightly longer than usual: 'MONSTRA TE ESSE MATREM SUMAT PER TE P(RECEM)' on the top and the right hand side, and the beginning on the left and bottom: 'AVE MARIS STELLA DEI MATER A{LMA)'. The miniature depicts the half-figures, behind a sill of Bernard in a white cowl and with hands clapsed in prayer kneeling before the Virgin and Child. The Virgin presses her bared breast with her right hand and sends a jet of milk in the direction of Bernard. Both Bernard and the Virgin have halos consisting of rays. The main text 'Caritate vulneratus castitate dealbatus verbo vitae laureatus est bernardus subkimatus in celesti gloria....' is the Alleluia verse in the Mass for the feast of Bernard.
