Description:
Miniature in a manuscript of Vincent de Beauvais' 'Speculum Historiale' from South Netherlands dated 1475-1500. Bernard on his deathbed in a black cowl with the hood over his head lies with hands clasped on a red bed with his head on a white pillow. His crozier with sudarium attached lies next to him. Beside the bed are seven of his monks also in black cowls, six of them with their hoods over their heads, one sitting and the rest standing. One of them has his hands clasped in prayer, one has one hand on his face, and the rest have their hands in the sleeves of their cowls. The miniature is headed in red ink: 'De la recommendation du benoyt bernart abbe de clervaux. Premier chapitre' (From the testimonial of blessed Bernard, abbot of Clairvaux. First Chapter) - from Book 28, Chapter 1 of the 'Speculum Historiale'.
