Description:
One of four leaves from a Missal dated mid-fifteenth century which may have belonged to the Cistercian abbey of Neubourg in Alsace as one of the leaves contains the arms which point to this abbey, and as it also accords well with the style of illumination which points strongly towards the Rhineland. Bernard, in white tunic and black scapular, is preaching from an open-air pulpit to a group of seven monks in the same habits, one of whom is asleep. The miniature is above an illuminated initial I(n medio ecclesie), the introit from the feast of Bernard.
