Description:
Fraom a Book of Hours of the Holy Cross from 1430-40 partly in Latin and partly in Middle Dutch. The Dutch part contains eight prayers to saints with three illustrations, one withe the two Johns (f 132v), one with Saint Catherine (f 145v), and this one with Saint Peter and Bernard, a unique combination in bernardine iconography. Saint Peter carries a book and two keys in his left hand while his right hand holds a sword indicating his martyrdom. The image of Bernard is the conventional one of him in a white cowl with a crozier in his right hand and a book in his left
