Description:
In a book of private prayers and devotions in Latin and French with many fine miniatures, borders, and initials by different hands related to the style of manuscripts made for Louis XII in the region of Rouen. Contains the initials NN and a portrait of the owner, a member of the Scepeaux family. At the beginning of the Verses of Bernard in Latin but introduced in French is a full-page miniature with a Lactation scene and a richly decorated border. On the right is the crowned figure of the Virgin in a blue garment sitting on a throne and with her feet on a red velvet cushion. She holds the Child with her left hand and with her right hand she presses her breast, a jet of milk going in the direction of a kneeling Bernard with hands clasped and his crozier under his right arm. He looks up at the Virgin in an exchange of glances, and the scroll above him has him saying the traditional words: 'Monstra te esse matrem'. A green book with two clasps lies on the tiled floor.
