Description:
This historiated initial B(ernardus) is in the summer part which forms the second volume of a Breviary known as the Breviary of Langres or of Jean d'Amboise, named after the bishop of Langres of that name (1481-97). It forms the beginning of the Life of Bernard. The central figure is of a nimbed Bernard in a dark grey cowl with gold borders and the hood over his head and holding an open book in both hands. He is flanked by a monk on each side, both with cowls like Bernard and with the hoods partially over their heads. One of them holds an open book, the other a closed blue book. Behind the figures are green trees and a blue sky. The same folio has the figure of a small tonsured monk in the bottom right corner, and in the top left corner one of a tonsured monk with an animal body.
