Description:
One of a number of manuscripts, all of Cistercian character and all from one workshop, given by Queen Elizabeth, who married two kings of Bohemia, Venceslas II (d 1305) and Rudolf of Habsburg (d 1307), to the Cistercian nuns' abbey of Stare Brno which she founded in 1323. Among them was an Antiphonary from around the same date with this historiated initial M with foliate ornament and featuring St Benedict on the left in a black cowl with a crozier in his left hand and a book in his right hand, and, on the right Bernard in a white habit and also with a crozier in his left hand and a book in his right. Both saints are nimbed.
