Description:
Bernard is featured in this miniature for his feast day ('In natale sancti Bernardi abbatis') in one of 52 miniatures and historiated initials plus twelve calendar miniatures in a Latin Breviary from the Rhine/Meuse region. He is shown in a white cowl with a crozier in his right hand and an open book in his left within an arch supported by two columns against a red background. The richly decorated border has a bird drinking from a fountain, a tethered squirrel with its box on a stand, flowers and an insect.
