Description:
From a paper manuscript of the Lives of the Saints derived from James of Voragine's Golden Legend. Written in 1419 in an Alsatian dialect of German, this pen and ink drawing of the traditional Amplexus scene set out of doors is decorated using only three colours: green for Christ's loincloth, the grass on which the cross is placed and the two trees in the background, yellow for the cross, Christ's and Bernard's halos, and Bernard's crozier and tonsure, and a pale brown for Bernard's cowl.
