Description:
Bernard? A Bible, probably produced in Paris, has a standing tonsured figure in a grey habit and with a golden halo shown instructing a kneeling monk also in a grey habit. His right hand is raised in a teaching mode and he holds a book in his left hand. He has previosly been identified as St Francis because of the colour of the habit, but the usual Franciscan knotted cord around the waist is missing and Cistercians are also frequently depicted wearing grey and were in fact also often known as the 'grey monks', and he is more likely to represent Bernard. The manuscript may have been brought back by an Eberbach Paris scholar. There is another illustration of a similar figure in the same manuscript (see MA50).
