Description:
The first folio of an Italian manuscript of the Proper of the Mass for Bernard according to the Ambrosian Rite of Milan dated 1370-5 has this miniature of the kneeling Commendatore Galeas II Visconti (died 1378) with hands clasped in prayer, being presented by a standing Bernard with his hand on the commendatore's head to an enthroned Virgin with the Child on her knees. The Child's outstretched hand acknowledges the devotion of the kneeling figure. The two saints behind the kneeling figure are the hermit St Anthony and the apostle Barholomew. The Commendatore is identified by his coat of arms at the bottom of the folio. Bernard has 'tuft'.
