Description:
This full-page portrayal of a nimbed Bernard, crozier in his right hand and book in his left, sitting on a faldstool with animal heads and feet and wearing eucharistic vestments (alb and chasuble) was probably produced in the important scriptorium of Altzelle during the abbacy of Ludeger who died after 1234. It introduces Bernard's Sermons on the Song of Songs. The inscription which surrounded the picture has been obliterated, but the letters 'San..i Ber. h. r.' can still be deciphered.
