Description:
Book of Hours in Latin - Use of Rome, partly from South Netherlands (perhaps Hainault or Brabant) c 1480 and partly Flanders (Bruges) c 1500. Among the historiated initials which belong to the second campaign of illumination is this Bernard within the initial I(llumina) from the Eight Verses of St Bernard. The seven 'O' Antiphons from the last days of Advent are interspersed between the verses. A standing Bernard in a white cowl, carrying a crozier and and open book, holds a demon on a chain at his feet.
