Description:
A single leaf from a Gradual. 1450-75. The bearded Bernard standing holding a red book and a crozier set in a landscape with towering cliffs on the right and distant blue cities on the horizon, sky flecked with blue with white fluffy clouds. The initial I(n medio ecclesie) is from the introit of the Mass of Bernard. In the style of Ser Benedetto di Silvestro of Fiesole, recorded as illuminator in Florence 1445-73. To judge from the subject, the miniature was probably from a Cistercian choirbook.
