This fragment of a Hymnal from c 1480, a bifolio, contains a number of hymns to the suffering Christ. They are verses from a long Passion poem ascribed to Bernard, much of whose teaching centred on the suffering of Christ in his Passion. The music accompanying this hymn is still sung to-day in the Good Friday Liturgy when the Sacrament is brought back to the High Altar. Bernard is shown embracing the foot of the cross as is customary on Good Friday. He is surrounded by Mary, St John, the two Marys, Longinus, soldiers and lay men.
